Our Mission
Wave That Flag is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization founded to inspire the next generation of voters and empower young people to have a voice in our democracy.
Wave That Flag was started by students who grew up in a familes of devoted Grateful Dead fans. While the Grateful Dead intentionally avoided partisan politics, they inspired generations with themes of freedom, community, and civic participation. Their concerts famously featured “Participation Row,” where nonprofit organizations encouraged fans to get involved in their communities—including by registering to vote.
Inspired by that tradition, and by Utah’s law allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote, Wave That Flag was launched to ensure that young Utahns are ready to make their voices heard the moment they turn 18. The organization connects teens with Utah’s online voter pre-registration system while also hosting registration drives at schools, fairs, festivals, and community events across the state.
Wave That Flag is built on a simple idea: democracy is strongest when everyone participates. By helping young people take their first step toward civic engagement, the organization is working to cultivate a generation of informed, engaged citizens who are prepared to help shape Utah’s future.
